Historic ThomastonHistory & Heritage
Thomaston Colored Institute Historic District
The Thomaston Colored Institute, also known as Thomaston Academy, was completed in 1910 as a private school serving African American students. The building stands as an important reminder of education, perseverance and community leadership in Thomaston.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The new website gives this landmark a prominent place in Thomaston’s shared story and leaves room for expanded oral histories, archival photographs and preservation updates.
